SABMiller and Adelaide University to perfect beer-making

The university and Carlton and United Breweries (CUB), a subsidiary of UK-headquartered SABMiller, will jointly research the impact of barley quality on key attributes of the brewing process and beer quality.

The company will provide cash funding for a dedicated mid-level researcher at the Waite campus to focus on improving understanding of the barley grain, explore the impact of climates and agricultural practices on its development and the overall effect on malting and brewing processes of beer.The research agreement will initially be for 12 months.

With the help of the university’s Barley Program, led by Dr Jason Eglinton (pictured), the Australian barley industry has raised the bar on new varieties designed for the “starch adjunct”. In fact the quality of Australian malting barleys is now considered the best in the world by international customers.
